CONNECTING HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WITH WELL-PAYING, FAMILY-WAGE CAREERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY.

Events: Welcome

What is the Community Pulse Series?

The Community Pulse Series is a sequence of three, free public events focused on connecting marginalized communities to high-paying and rewarding jobs in the construction industry! Each year, these casual events offer a great opportunity to connect potential job seekers with industry experts in a relaxed, family-friendly environment.

The Community Pulse Series primary objectives

Equitable Impact

Expand access to the construction industry to the BIPOC community via collaboration with construction companies, BIPOC construction contractors, and allies in the construction industry.

Economic Opportunity

Connect historically and economically impacted communities with viable, middle-class employment opportunities that do not require a college education. Student loan debt has had a staggering effect on the economic standing of many college students within many BIPOC communities.

Environmental Well-Being

Champion careers in green energy and conservation. Connect community members to contractors and organizations specializing in conservation and with training programs that equip participants with skills for careers in green energy and construction.

How can I get involved?

The event supports intentional recruitment to the construction industry from the BIPOC community—empowering historically underrepresented people with career information that will positively impact their families and communities for generations to come. The event also features a marketplace with vendor tables from BIPOC business owners.

Are you a potential jobseeker or business leader? There are multiple ways to get involved!

At each event, people from apprenticeship programs, pre-apprenticeship programs, and unions—as well as contractors and trade workers—will be ready to talk with you about rewarding careers in the construction industry. This means you, as a potential job seeker, can ask them the hard questions!

Feel free to drop into the events any time—and bring your friends and family. Email CommunityPulseSeries@gmail.com with questions.

Are you a construction industry leader, BIPOC business owner, or professional organization?

This event has historically garnered support from the City of Portland, Portland Bureau of Transportation, Andersen Construction, the National Association of Minority Contractors, Hoffman Construction, California Closets, Plumbers/ Steam Fitters Local 290, Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute, NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Institute, LIUNA, TRC Companies, Energy Trust of Oregon, TriMet, Interstate Corridor Improvement Project, Portland Community College and more. We’d love to add your name to that list!

Key goals for Community Pulse

  • 250 community attendees to encourage community building and empowerment.

  • Enough funds raised via partner sponsorship to help finance future engagement events and continuation of the Series.

  • Active participation from the construction industry at large, with a variety of trades represented.

  • Sparking excitement and interest in the construction industry within the BIPOC community.

  • Reaching a younger demographic with information on alternatives to college and the opportunity to help build America.

  • Creating prosocial, family wage career opportunities for communities disproportionately impacted by gun violence, recidivism, houselessness and economic disparities.

Contact us today about a vendor table, monetary or in-kind sponsorship, or to volunteer at the events! Email CommunityPulseSeries@gmail.com for more information.
